HISTORY

Mortality audit has been a long standing tradition in surgery. Lothian surgeons recently celebrated their 50th anniversary, Lothian Surgical Audit being essentially a peer review mortality audit. Based on this model, the Conference of the Royal Colleges in Scotland wished to further develop this methodology and extend it across Scotland and into all surgical specialties. The initial project was started in 1988 and a similar study in the Greater Glasgow Health Board started in 1989. These two parallel studies worked closely together and amalgamated into the Scottish Audit of Surgical Mortality in 1994.

CONTRIBUTING SPECIALTIES

The Scottish Audit of Surgical Mortality has complete cover of all surgical specialties with the exceptions of Thoracic, Cardiac and Obstetric surgery who participate in UK wide national mortality audits. All deaths are now processed from a single office.
